Native to eastern and central North America, this small, multi-trunked tree proliferates along forest margins and in woodland thickets. It produces vivid, pink-purple, flowers which aggregate all along the bare branches. These small, round blossoms bloom prior to the tree's leaves in very early spring, and is often seen as an indicator of spring's arrival. The flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for butterflies, and the subsequent seed pods often attract songbirds.
