Real-World Learning
Are there any theories or questions you’re eager to investigate? You can at F&M. The
cornerstone of our educational experience is students working and learning side-by-side
with faculty who want to help you test ideas — not just talk or read about them. Get valuable hands-on experience now and gain a competitive advantage in the job market
later. Internships allow you to explore fields and job functions of interest, building
your portfolio while shaping and inspiring your path in both expected and unexpected
ways. Off-campus study is an integral component of an F&M liberal arts education. Whether
it be a semester-long program, a summer internship, or a research project, these experiences
aren’t simply time away from campus; they’re meaningfully woven into your entire academic
journey.Research

Fellowships
Eager to continue your academic and professional development across the globe? Fellowships offer often-funded experiential learning opportunities such as advanced study, research, internships, service, travel, and more. At F&M, you’ll find expert guidance and support in discovering and applying for fellowships.
Community-Based Learning
Community-based learning (CBL) links traditional classroom learning to real, hands-on experiences and learning in the larger community. CBL differs from voluntarism because students are prompted to intentionally reflect on their experiences and link their hands-on experience with their course’s readings and lectures. These activities provide students with experiences to test theories and ideas they learn in their course lectures and assignments. F&M’s Ware Institute frequently partners with F&M faculty to design a CBL course and find appropriate placements in the community for students.

March 13, 2025 With a passion for psychology and natural gift for helping others, April Rump ’25 set her sights on F&M, a college she said “just felt right.” Financial aid played a crucial role in her journey, empowering her to not only attend F&M, but study abroad as well. “F&M provided the space for me to grow and explore, making a difference in my life in ways I never imagined,” she said. March 7, 2025 Anaya Peguero ’25 quickly found that F&M professors saw her promise — and would challenge her to fulfill her potential and own her influence. March 6, 2025 Mary Wade ’25 was interning with the Phillips Museum of Art when a particular set of photographs caught her eye. The photos, taken by 20th century photographer Mike Disfarmer, inspired an independent study researching the evolution of portraiture.Diplomats Beyond the Classroom
