Research Use of Animals Policy

Research and Teaching Involving Animals

The use of animals in research and teaching is in all cases subject to review by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

The College is committed to ensuring that the care and use of animals in teaching or research is consistent with sound ethical principles and that it is in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. College policy and procedures relating to the care and use of animals are based on the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, which is itself derived from the Health Research Extension Act of 1985, Public Law 99-158. The College also complies with the Animal Welfare Regulations of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Each department in which research or teaching involving animals is conducted shall establish formal procedures to ensure the proper care and use of animals under its auspices. These procedures must include a mechanism that will bring all activities that require approval of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to the attention of that committee and they must assure the proper day-to-day implementation of procedures that have been approved by the committee. A document describing these procedures should be submitted to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee for its approval.

All research and laboratory teaching involving animals must receive approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee prior to its initiation.

All departments in which animals are housed or used should obtain and require members of the Faculty to be familiar with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, published by the National Institute of Health, and more specialized guidelines appropriate to field or laboratory research and teaching involving particular groups of animals.

Please see Research Guidelines: Human Subject and Vertebrate Animal Study for more info (F&M login required).
