F&M Stories

Michael Vasquez ’25 Found a Campus that Felt Like Home

Michael Vasquez ’25 was drawn to F&M’s liberal arts approach to academics, but it was the sense of community—on and off campus—that sealed the deal when he was deciding where to attend college.

“I’ve loved going downtown with friends, watching my peers grow into their passions, and helping students find their place on campus,” he said. “Brooklyn, N.Y., where I was born and raised, will forever be my hometown, but I moved to Lancaster in 2021, so I call both home.”

Activities at F&M: Student body and Diplomatic Congress president, Weis College House Adviser

Why did you choose to attend F&M?

I am a Posse Scholar and was introduced to the concept of the liberal arts during my interview process. I was immediately drawn to the encouragement to explore a multitude of disciplines and create my own college experience at F&M. Later in my deep dive into F&M, I was comforted by our incredible Office of Community & Belonging. As a first-generation, queer student of color, I was happy to know F&M was committed to ensuring everyone knows they belong.

What is something that you did for fun at F&M?

One of my favorite traditions is Weis College House’s karaoke night, hosted by our student government. These were nights filled with energy, unforgettable performances, and laughter. Whether on stage doing an interpretive dance or belting out a song, there was always so much support. Everyone gets a chance to be a performer or a fan. It’s always an absolute blast.

What did you enjoy most about your time at the College?

There’s so much to say! From collaborating with professors to enhance anti-racist curricula to exploring a plethora of different clubs, every experience has shaped my journey.

I’ve loved going downtown with friends, watching my peers grow into their passions, and helping students find their place on campus. Seeing the Diplomatic Congress evolve into a tight-knit, impactful community has been incredibly fulfilling.

And, of course, some of my best memories are the silly moments—like staying up until 4 a.m. playing video games in my College House great room with other students who stayed on campus over break, or hopping in my friend’s car for an impulsive Target or Sheetz run. These moments, big and small, have made my time at F&M truly unforgettable.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I am so excited that I have been accepted into Teach For America. I will be teaching 7th through 12th grade social studies in the greater Philadelphia area. I also plan to pursue a master’s degree and teaching certificate through one of TFA’s partnered graduate programs. I genuinely can’t wait to step into the classroom and enter the world of education!

What brief advice would you give to incoming students in F&M’s Class of 2029?

Be yourself and embrace this new journey. You were accepted into F&M for a reason. F&M welcomes you with open arms, no matter what you think your flaws are or what insecurities you may have. You are a Diplomat, and a great one.

College isn’t just about academics; it’s about discovering who you are, what you love, and how to advocate for yourself. The transition may feel overwhelming at times, but you’re not alone. Hundreds of students around you are going through the same journey. Embrace the awkwardness and the growth that comes with it. You’re going to be great when you get here, because you’re already great right now.

“F&M welcomes you with open arms...You are a Diplomat, and a great one.”
